About SRLS

Thank you for your interest in using the Socially Responsible Leadership Scale, distributed by the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs (NCLP). Research and assessment in leadership development helps us all to improve our practice for students as we continue to learn which experiences have the most impact on our learning outcomes.

The SRLS began with a dissertation by Dr. Tracy Tyree, who created a set of statistically reliable and valid scales that would measure the critical values identified in the Social Change Model (SCM) of Leadership Development. Her original scales included 104 question-items. A few years later, Dr. Cara Appel-Silbaugh and Dr. John Dugan used statistical techniques to reduce the number of questions in each scale, while retaining validity and reliability. Each of the scales aligns with a value of the Social Change Model of Leadership Development and is comprised of a series of questions in Likert scale format. All scales have been factor analyzed to verify validity and reliability.

As you plan your research or assessment project, you may decide that a random sample of your institution’s entire population is the best way to gather the data you need. In this case, the NCLP highly recommends participation in the Multi-Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL). The MSL is a very cost- effective way of conducting an institution-wide assessment. The data is gathered for you through an internet site and research team that collects responses, sorts the data into a usable format for statistics software, and provides a report of preliminary statistical analysis. SRLS Partners

The National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs (NCLP), through the development of cutting edge resources, information sharing, and symposium, supports leadership development in college students by serving as a central source of professional development for leadership educators. NCLP also works to connect leadership educators to one another and support those developing leadership programs in their communities.

Multi–Institutional Study of Leadership (MSL) is one of the largest studies of college student leadership to date and was further significant for its use of theoretically grounded measures. The impact of MSL extends beyond the arena of leadership education as well. Researchers have used data to explore a wide array of critical topics from campus climate and sense of belonging to student involvement and diversity education.

The Adele H. Stamp Student Union (The Stamp) is dedicated to involving students in meaningful ways in which they are able to interact with others and gain valuable experience and skills. Staff members serve as advocates, advisors, mentors, and partners in shaping the student experience. The Stamp values are student-centered, academic success, personal development, safe and inviting campus center.
