Socially Responsible Leadership Scale

The Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (SRLS) is an instrument based on the Social Change Model (SCM) of Leadership Development (HERI, 1998). The SRLS is used for research, assessment, and education to measure and identify student capacity for socially-reponsible leadership. SRLS is a simple web-based survey that takes only about 15 minutes to complete. Participants are instantly scored on the indvidual, group, and community values of the SCM. Research and assessment using the SRLS helps us all to improve our practice as we continue to learn which experiences have the most impact on the development of socially-responsible leadership in learners. To learn more about the Social Change Model (SCM) of Leadership Development, visit the Resources page. The SRLS is a resource from the National Clearinghouse for Leadership Programs.

Leadership & Social Change

The Social Change Model of Leadership Development

The SCM describes leadership as a purposeful, collaborative, values-driven process that happens at the individual, group, and community levels. The model's central principles of social responsibility and change for the common good are assessed through eight core values that describe a person's level of self-awareness and ability to work with others in the context of a community or society.

Leadership is a process, not a position.

Through the lens of the Social Change Model (SCM), a "leader" is anyone who wants to work with others to make a difference. The Socially Responsible Leadership Scale (SRLS) measures a person's leadership capacities based on the core values of the SCM.
